Barbara Murphy / Joan Harper 400m

The Barbara Murphy / Joan Harper 400m proved to be a very popular event with 3 heats and 26 swimmers participating. Congratulations to Joyce Grounds and Bill Jury on their wins!

There were many fines handed out on Sunday including Paul Cavanagh who disgraced the club at the Melbourne Cup festivities by ripping the sole off his shoe before he even entered the Kembla Grange Racecourse and then seeking assistance at the first aid tent to “fix” his shoe!

We have finally started to have some beautiful weather and it looks like all the wetsuits have been packed up for the year (even Bill Jury’s!).

Bill Jury 100m

It was yet again a slightly chilly morning down with a brisk wind whipping down the bay.

The weather did not dampen the spirits of the swimmers competing in the Bill Jury 100m. Joyce Grounds took home the trophy again! Congratulations Joyce and keep up the great swimming!

Gary Schmalfeldt Inaugural Memorial Trophy

Woolooware High School students attended the Greys Swim at Gunnamatta Bay to compete for the highly treasured Gary Schmalfeldt Inaugural Memorial Trophy.

Despite some blustery weather, a wonderful morning was had by all!  It was fantastic to see so many students and members in attendance… There was definitely the spirit of healthy competition in the air during both the individual and relay events.

The Woodland 400m

We had a great turn out on yet another cold Sunday morning with almost 40 swimmers participating in the 50m, 100m and 400m events.

Back on dry land, the big event of the day was the Denis and Lesley Woodland 400m. Congratulations to Joyce Grounds and Dave Dopson on their wins!

Also a big thank you to Paul Cavanagh and Jack Le Breton who, during the week, painted and installed an additional rail on the handrail to stop the rope crates from blowing into the bay.

Don Saunders 200m

After missing the first swim of the 2018-19 Summer Season due to bad weather last week, it was fantastic to see so many swimmers for our first official races.

Our new Club Captain, Lisa Hedge, and Vice Captain, Cheryl Poppett attempt to establish a level of discipline and order to the club with a small number of fines.
Note: The longer list is fines for the men (of course).

The trophy event for the day was the Don Saunders 200m for nearest to the tag time. It was awarded to Ann Wood and Bill Jury. Congratulations on fantastic swims.

Cold and wet start to the 2018-19 Summer Season

Unfortunately, the 2018-19 summer season kicked off in rather cold and wet conditions and the official race events were cancelled. However, some dedicated and slightly mad swimmers braved the water for a wire-to-wire swim in sub 16 degree water.

Once the rains cleared, a beautiful rainbow appeared over Gunnamatta Bay.  Hopefully we will have better conditions for next week.
